Jan 7, 2016 | At EUROGUSS 2016, TRIMET Aluminium SE will be presenting a diverse range of products and services. In close collaboration with its customers, the materials specialist is developing innovative automotive applications made of aluminum casting alloys for car body construction.

With tailor-made aluminum alloys as well as lightweight components and systems, TRIMET Aluminium SE is doing its part to boost innovative development in the automotive industry. In the process, the family-owned company is aligning tried-and-tested TRIMET alloys on new requirements. One example is trimal®-37. The substance is used, among other applications, for hinge mountings, heel boards, and electric vehicle components for German production series manufacturers. The alloy is of the type AlSi9Mn and distinguishes itself, among other characteristics, by its outstanding castability and high level of ductility when cast.

Innovative trimal®-37 application fields for die-cast parts include a hinge mounting that is used in the Audi Q7 and other premium-class SUVs (illustration). It forms the nodal point between the cantrail, the roof cross rail, and the side strut. The use of the component in an as-cast state eliminates dimensional distortion, thereby enabling high geometric tolerance requirements to be met. The component is connected by punch rivets, including with formed parts made of steel and aluminum sheets. The trimal®-37 alloy is also used for heel boards in the latest Audi A8. Among other tasks, it connects the center tunnel with various base plates. The outstanding weldability of the material is shown to advantage here.

The development of tailor-made products in close collaboration with the customer is a matter of course for the medium-sized aluminum specialists. “We have been working successfully for many years with our partners in the automotive industry. From cast nodes to engine blocks, our highly qualified employees manufacture a wide range of aluminum products made of different aluminum alloys, in line with our customers’ requirements,” says Luigi Mattina, member of the Management Board of TRIMET Aluminium SE.
