Top-class high-pressure die castings from the heart of Thuringia

Feb 1, 2016 | Wolfgang Tiefensee, Thuringian Minister of Economy, Science and Digital Society, visited TRIMET’s Sömmerda location today, where he was briefed on the production of high-quality aluminum products. Nearly 215 employees develop and manufacture about six million die castings here each year. The Minister discussed current developments in the world of aluminum, as well as the Thuringian die casting sector, with TRIMET CEO Luigi Mattina and Plant Manager Frank Eberhardt.

In the heart of Thuringia, TRIMET Automotive Sömmerda GmbH & Co. KG produces sophisticated aluminum die castings, primarily for the automotive industry. Together with its Harzgerode sister plant in Saxony-Anhalt, the location delivers a wide range of high-quality components to nearly all well-known German and international automotive manufacturers and tier-1 customers. The production plant is operating at full production capacity. The staff, including 13 apprentices, manufactures aluminum mechatronic parts for various automatic transmission applications on 14 die casting machines, eight CNC processing systems, and two heat treatment furnaces. The complex manufacturing processes for these mechatronic parts require special expertise and state-of-the-art machinery.

The materials specialist TRIMET Aluminium SE took over the Harzgerode and Sömmerda locations in 2001. With investments of more than EUR 220 million, it has since expanded them into the successful Automotive Division. Three new, ultramodern high-pressure die casting systems, including peripherals, have gone into operation over the past two years in Sömmerda alone.

The service spectrum ranges from the development and construction of tools to the casting, machining, and surface finishing of aluminum die cast parts and the assembly of finished components. With mechatronic die cast parts for automatic and dual-clutch transmissions, TRIMET serves a particularly sophisticated segment of the automotive industry. The product range includes valves and feeder components that are used in electro-hydraulic transmission controllers.

Regional and socially committed employer

As a family-owned enterprise, TRIMET is committed to promoting young talent. In Sömmerda, 13 young people are currently being trained as tool, foundry, and cutting machine operators, as well as mechatronics technicians and industrial clerks.

The company has received numerous awards for its commitment to the promotion of young talent. Most recently, it was honored with regional educational awards from the Chambers of Industry and Commerce. In 2015, TRIMET also received the Enterprise Award for a Welcoming Culture “Mit Vielfalt zum Erfolg” (“With diversity to success”) from the German Federal Ministry of Economics.

TRIMET serves and supplies the aluminum industry’s entire value chain with one-stop, tailor-made products. With four production plants, two recycling plants, four foundries, a marketing and commercial division, and state-of-the-art research and development laboratories, TRIMET offers its customers a particularly broad product portfolio. The medium-sized company is a reliable partner to its customers and a modern and dependable employer to its staff.
