The trimal®-04 alloy (AlSi10MnMg) is a recycled alloy with reduced iron content, which makes it highly ductile in its as-cast state. Furthermore, additional technical alloying measures give the material good energy absorption capabilities.

The alloy is produced at the TRIMET Aluminium SE recycling plants in Gelsenkirchen and Harzgerode using selected scrap aluminium.
The outstanding casting and mold-filling behavior of the trimal®-04 alloy is primarily due to a silicon content of approx. ten percent by weight. Due to the reduced iron content, adding a defined amount of manganese reliably prevents the alloy from adhering to the die casting mold. The strength and hardness are defined by the magnesium content. In addition to the above-mentioned measures, enhancing the eutectic silicon makes the material more ductile and gives it good energy absorption capabilities in its as-cast state.

The following mechanical properties were measured on oil pans. The elongation figures relate to the floor area with a medium wall thickness of 2.5 mm and the hardness was calculated using the flange (wall thickness of 6.5 mm). Partial T0 heat treatment in the floor area is possible to further increase the ductility. The figures should be viewed as reference values for this alloy using the die casting process.

trimal®-04 is suitable for die casting parts which have to possess good elongation and energy absorption capabilities in the as-cast state. Possible applications include ductile oil pans, covers, or casing components with similar requirements.
